IEWL awarded Maruti Suzuki’s Greenfield Project
Ion Exchange Waterleau awarded turnkey execution of 960 m3/day effluent treatment plant for Maruti Suzuki’s greenfield project at Manesar, Haryana.
Right from inception IEI has been the preferred vendor of Maruti Suzuki, with contracts for water, effluent and sewage treatment and effluent recycling entrusted to as per Maruti’s expansion programme. No surprise then, way back in 1997, IEI was the obvious choice for the first ever effluent recycling based on reverse osmosis in the automobile sector.
Now, on the verge of commissioning is the turnkey concept-to-commissioning contract of effluent treatment plant, awarded to our joint venture Ion Exchange Waterleau Ltd. by Maruti Suzuki, for their 3 lakh car/year expansion project at Manesar. Effluent from all the operations is treated in a 960 m3/day centralised effluent treatment plant comprising dissolved air floatation followed by aerobic bio-degradation and regenerative filtration. The treated output will be reused for auxiliary applications and gardening.
An order from Hero Honda, Uttaranchal , for their motor control centre, for a 18 m3/h reverse osmosis (RO)system, 65 m3/h filter and 65 m3/h softener.

JSW Recycles Cooling Tower Blowdown
A milestone contract for IEI - our first water recycling plant for an integrated steel plant in India.
JSW Steel made use of fresh water from the Tungabhadra River for their operations at Tornagallu, Bellary in Karnataka. Keen on reducing its fresh water intake, JSW decided, as a first step, to treat the cooling tower blowdown from three units viz. the hot strip mill, basic oxygen furnace (BOF) and cold rolling mill (CRM); this water was not being treated and was used mostly for low end applications such as pellet plant and slag quenching.
IEI was awarded the contract for treating 125 m3/hr cooling tower blowdown which will give 105 m3/h RO permeate of excellent quality, with TDS < 250 ppm. The treatment process comprises physico-chemical treatment with high rate solids contact clarification, sand and carbon filtration, ultra filtration and two-stage RO. The treated water will be used for high end applications like the process requirement of the CRM. The RO reject will be used for slag quenching.
The contract is on a semi-BOO model as, apart from constructing the plant, the scope includes 10-year complete O&M services – inclusive of manpower, maintenance and supply of all spares, chemicals, consumables besides membrane replacement.
Once this plant is operational, JSW plans to recycle about 400 m3/h more waste water from various other sources to further reduce fresh water consumption.
IEWL successfully completed JSW Steel’s CRM unit
Ion Exchange Waterleau successfully completed and handed over the Phase - I 2200 m3/day effluent treatment plant for JSW Steel’s CRM unit at Bellary. The Phase II effluent treatment plant is in final stage of commissioning. The complex effluents from various CRM operations containing very high oil and grease, organics, heavy metals in highly acidic and alkaline streams are treated in a specifically designed tailor made treatment system to achieve safe disposal standards in line with PCB requirements. This contract followed Ion Exchange success in treating CRM effluent earlier for Tata Steel.
IEWL received ETP contract from Essar Steel
Essar Steel Ltd. has awarded Ion Exchange Waterleau with the contract for effluent treatment plant for its CRM unit at Hazira. The treatment scheme involves specific, customised, segregated treatment of various streams to treat very high oil and grease, organics, heavy metals in highly acidic and alkaline streams to achieve safe disposal standards in line with requirements of the pollution control board; the plant is PLC operated, with SCADA monitoring. With this, the steel sector has confirmed its confidence in Ion Exchange Waterleau’s expertise in the field.
Successfully Commissioned at O.P. Jindal Thermal Power Project
Successfully commissioned, plant comprising pretreatment, demineralisation with ultra filtration, side stream filtration and chlorination with accessories and auxiliary packages for the 1000 MW (4x250 MW) O.P. Jindal Thermal Power Project at Tamnar, District Raigarh, Chattisgarh. The pretreatment plant consists of three clarifiers, each of 1750 m3/h capacity; demineralisation plant consists of a 3 x 100 m3/h chain, ultra filtration along with accessories and auxiliaries, cooling water treatment plant comprises six vacuum feed chlorinators of 200 kg/h each, and the twenty 20 automatic valveless gravity filters are each of 175 m3/h capacity.
Order for SWRO Plant from Gujarat Anjan Cement
An order from Gujarat Anjan Cement Ltd., Kutch, for a 6 MLD sea water reverse osmosis (SWRO) plant. The treatment scheme consists of a flash mixer, flocculation tank, lamella clarifier, gravity filter, pressure filters, cartridge filter, high pressure pump with turbo and RO modules with three skids of 85 m3/h each.
Zero Discharge Project at Ambuja Cements
Ambuja Cement (HOLICIM), Ropar, Punjab awarded IEI the contract for a zero discharge plant - our 1 st complete zero discharge project where the entire recycling system as well as the evaporator equipment are being supplied by us. And it is also the 1st integrated zero discharge project for a cement plant in India which will recover over 93% of the waste water for reuse. The balance 7% will be evaporated leaving no liquid waste for discharge.
The plant will recycle cooling tower blowdown, softener regeneration waste and DM water regeneration waste using clarification, ultra filtration and two stage reverse osmosis. The reject from the second RO plant will be taken to a 100 m3/day evaporator where there will be 80% evaporation and the balance 20% taken to a solar pond. It will treat F m3/day of waste water with recovery of 430 m3/day with TDS < 200 ppm.
O&M Services for Rohm and Haas
Water and waste water treatment plant at Rohm and Haas, Sriperumbudur. Water treatment scheme includes high rate solids contact clarifier, multigrade filter, UV sateriliser, reverse osmosis and degasser, while that of the waste water treatment plant consists of biological section, multrigrade filter, ultra filtration and two stage reverse osmosis.
Unique Sugar Condensate Treatment
Ion Exchange has developed a new technology for recovery and reuse of sugar condensate generated from sugar mills - the first time in the world a treatment process is available to remove organics contaminants from sugar condensate. The patent application for this technology has been filed. The treated condensate can be used for medium and high pressure boilers in co-gen power plants as well as for cooling towers as make up water. The treated condensate can be used as makeup for cooling towers.
Given the increasing water scarcity, this is a breakthrough technology for the sugar industry, as it effectively conserves fresh water resources through reuse of treated condensate. India has around 500 sugar mills, with 18 million tonnes of annual sugar production. Normally sugar mills have a crushing capacity of 2,500 to 10,000 tonnes per day, generating 70% of sugar condensate. Thus, a sugar mill with sugarcane crushing capacity 5000 tonnes/day produces 3500 tonnes condensate per day. Adoption of our sugar condensate treatment technology will enable sugar mills to significantly reduce their dependency on fresh water from rivers, dams, etc.
With this development, IEI is able to offer the sugar sector an even broader spectrum of solutions, adding to its extensive range of water and waste water treatment and speciality process chemicals.
INDION ASM (Arsenic Selective Media)
Ion Exchange has introduced INDION ASM Arsenic Selective Media, a path breaking arsenic removal technology far superior to the current technologies available.
INDION ASM is designed to selectively remove arsenic from ground water without affecting other water quality parameters. Its unique chemistry is based on impregnation of hydrated ferric oxide with a high affinity for arsenic and durable polymer substrate. It is used like conventional ion exchange resins and there is absolutely no generation of fines during use. Compared to other technologies, INDION ASM is far more robust and can handle greater arsenic loads per cubic foot of media at high concentrations of arsenic (max. 3000 ppb). The media also has an extremely high static adsorption capacity of 30mg/g of resin.
INDION ASM performs well even in the presence of common anions such as chlorides, sulphates or bicarbonates. However, excessive iron, manganese, hydrogen sulphide, anions like silica, phosphate and vanadium may affect the performance of this media and should be removed in pretreatment.
INDION ASM has been validated during extensive field studies with iron removal handpump attachment and point-of-use units in West Bengal, India where arsenic ranges from 200-500 ppb and treated water showed <10 ppb arsenic on a continuous basis. The exhausted media has successfully passed the TCLP test as per EPA 1311 and is non-toxic and safe for disposal.
Developed completely indigenously, INDION ASM eliminates dependence on foreign technologies even as its technological superiority holds tremendous potential in overseas markets.
Novel process for purification of caustic in bottling plant industry
It’s the customary procedure in bottling plants to recycle glass bottles to refill products such as beer and cold drinks. The used glass bottles are collected from different places and brought to the factory where they are sterilised by using 2% hot caustic soda solution. The caustic is used for 10 to 15 days till it is contaminated with iron, suspended solids, colour bodies and carbonates. It is then neutralised with an equal amount of acid and disposed off as per the norms set by the pollution control board.
Ion Exchange has now developed a process based on ion exchange resins for removal of the above impurities. As the same caustic soda can be used continuously there is no need to use fresh caustic; moreover, no waste water is generated. Thus our caustic purification process, which has been patented, enables substantial savings, giving a payback period of just 1½ years.
INDION EcoServe
Efficient, Economical and Eco-friendly
Recently launched INDION ECOSERVE is a state-of-the art system designed to treat and recycle vehicle wash effluent. Ideal for service stations, bus depots, automobile manufacturers, metro yards etc. INDION EcoServe conserves large volumes of fresh water saving upto 80& water costs while enabling compliance with environmental discharge regulations for vehicle wash waste streams.

Vehicle wash effluent contains large amount of petroleum hydrocarbons (oil, grease, fuels), heavy metals, cleaning fluids and detergent, besides high levels of COD and BOD, Moreover, vehicle wash facilities use vast volumes of water which is then sent to drain, thus wasting an increasingly scarce and valuable resource.
The INDION ECOSERVE removes free floating and emulsified oil, grease and suspended particles – organic and inorganic, as well as colour and odour, thereby making the water fit for reuse for vehicle washing. The compact, skid mounted system is totally automated using intelligent control for precise measuring and monitoring which reduces maintenance.

ITC Maurya ordered for MBR
ITC Maurya, earlier managed by Sheraton and now part of the Star Wood luxury chain, is among the most preferred hotels in Delhi, playing host to presidents, prime ministers and high level dignitaries of many countries. The hotel is being renovated to international standards, and as part of the refurbishment of the sewage treatment plant, Ion Exchange was awarded the contract for supply of an 800 m3/day membrane bio-reactor – the contract was won against international competition. We will also be providing O&M services for five years.
Prestigious breakthrough from Unitech
Another prestigious breakthrough is the supply of a 50 m3/day membrane bio-reactors to Unitech (Shantiniketan Buildwell) for their new corporate office campus which is under construction in Saket. Unitech is the second largest builder in the construction segment and among the top three in terms of land bank, with a hundred plus projects under construction or ready to start. Unitech’s choice of our membrane bio-reactor for their own complex is of telling importance in terms of technology and supplier preference.
Their Choice of Brew
When Heinekein, the world’s leading beer manufacturer, decided to put up a greenfield project in India - Asia Pacific Pearl Pvt. Ltd. at Hyderabad, to produce their world famous brands, IEI was the obvious choice for water and waste water management, particularly as breweries produce complex effluents high on organics.
Based on its global domain expertise of many years in treating brewery effluent, Ion Exchange Waterleau was awarded the order for a 1000 m3/day effluent treatment plant. The state-of-the art, PLC operated plant comprises a LUCAS anaerobic system (UASB), which converts 2000 kg/day of COD into the valuable by-product of biogas, followed by a LUCAS secondary aerobic system based on cyclic activated sequencing batch reactor (SBR) treatment process. The LUCAS SBR treatment process offer the advantages of a compact, modular, easy to operate and expand system with less maintenance compared to conventional systems, due to the absence of a secondary clarifier mechanism and sludge recirculation pumps.
To conserve water, it was decided to recycle the treated effluent for use in utility and auxiliary applications. The recycle system added on comprises a high rate solids contact clarifier for silica removal, regenerative filtration followed by ultra filtration and reverse osmosis. Biogas, as an energy source, and water from the effluent recycling plant are the net resource gains. The water treatment and management system was supplied by Ion Exchange thus completing total water management solutions for the brewery.
IEWL bagged order from Asia Pacific Brewery
Ion Exchange Waterleau’s first export order, from Asia Pacific Brewery, Sri Lanka,
is for augmentation of the existing 250 m3/day effluent treatment plant to 500 m3/day by inclusion of LUCAS anaerobic system (UASB) followed by upgradation of the existing aerobic biological system.
Restoring Clear Waters
The eutrophication of the large 50 hectare Hebbal lake at Bangalore was adversely affecting realty value in the vicinity and had also become a prime impediment to the development of a high end complex in the area by to East India Hotel of Delhi,
LUCAS technology offered by Ion Exchange Waterleau is the ideal solution for nutrient removal to abate eutrophication of water bodies. Together with East India Hotel, Ion Exchange Waterleau took up this lake restoration project. The lake was cleaned for restoration. Ion Exchange Waterleau installed a state-of-the-art 4 MLD capacity sewage reclamation plant based on its proprietary technology of cyclic activated sequencing batch reactor process with co-current removal of nutrients - the culprits behind the eutrophication. The cyclic sequencing batch reactor (SBR) technology of Ion Exchange Waterleau is ideal for sewage and industrial effluent reclamation as it offers very compact modular solutions (requiring just 25% area of conventional systems) that are also very user friendly with PLC operations. Ion Exchange Waterleau will also undertake the responsibility of operating and maintaining the system.
The treated sewage, free from organics and nutrients, will be used to replenish water losses from this large water body. The restored lake has not only added to the aesthetics and value of the area but will be developed as a recreational tourist attraction to generate revenue.

Record contract in Indian industrial
water treatment
The Chennai Petroleum Corporation
Limited (CPCL) , Chennai awarded
a contract for a 5.8 MGD desalination
project on turnkey basis to
Ion Exchange India's Water &
Environment division. The sea
water reverse osmosis plant
is of 1100 m3/h capacity
and the scope includes civil
work and high tension electrical
system with mechanical, electrical
and automation of the plant.
This is the largest value order
in sea water desalination in
the history of Indian industrial
water treatment industry. We
have already executed a contract
from CPCL, Manali for a zero
discharge effluent and sewage
recycle plant, feed capacity
200 m3/h. The plant
incorporates pretreatment, filtration,
ultrafiltration and reverse
osmosis..
Zero Discharge Plant for CPCL

The capacity of CPCL's 3 mtpa
refinery at Manali was doubled
in 2002, increasing the refinery's
requirement of process water.
Although CPCL was treating raw
sewage from municipal supplies
in their tertiary treatment
plant, this was proving costly
for process requirements; moreover,
not only was the quality and
quantity of sewage inconsistent
but also insufficient to meet
the demands of the expanded
refinery.
Hence the concept of a new zero
discharge plant was mooted and
the contract awarded to Ion
Exchange India Limited. The
plant, feed capacity 200 m3/h,
incorporates pretreatment, coagulation
and filtration, ultra filtration
and reverse osmosis, and degassification.
It treats water from the existing
effluent treatment plants of
CPCL, for process use in the
refinery. The process waste
water is led back to the effluent
treatment plants and thus the
waste is recycled again. The
water used for cleaning and
backwashing is also generated
at various stages of the treatment
plant.
The zero
discharge plant amply demonstrates
that recycle of waste water
not only protects the environment
bu tmakes good business sense
with water becoming increasingly
scarce and costly

Innovative, Cost-Effective
Solutions for the Dyeing Industry
Cost Effective Zero Discharge was the theme of athe
seminar organised by Ion Exchange India with the
help of Dyers Association of Tirupur (DAT) and the
Federation of CETPs at Tirupur. The keynote address
by Mr. Rajesh Sharma, our Managing Director was
followed by the address by Chief Guest Mr. N. Kandaswamy,
President, Dyers Assocaition, Tirupur. Other
speakers included Dr. S. Appuswamy and Mr. K. M.
Subramaniam, President and Secretary respectively
of the Federation of CETPs, and Mr. K. V. Giri,
General Secretary, Tiupur Bleachers Association.
Ion Exchange India presented an extremely cost-effective
technology to address the waste water problems
posed by the widespread textile dyeing industry
in Tirupur district. The unique membrane-based
Ultra Filtration (UF)-Reverse Osmosis (RO) combination
system we offer is a huge improvement over conventional
RO systems. We had installed such an effluent
recycling system, capacity 2 lakh litres/day,
at Arora Fashions, Veerapandy village, Tirupur..
Around 75% of the influent to the plant is recovered
and recycled. This project was discussed as a
case in point during the seminar.
Tirupur has about 700 textile dyeing units located
in different parts of its outskirts. All these
units produce large volumes of waste water containing
a lot of colour, total dissolved solids (TDS)
and other impurities rendering it unfit to be
discharged into the soil or river. With conventional
RO systems only about 60% - 70% of the water can
be recovered while the balance 30% - 40% goes
as reject. To handle this reject again a huge
amount of money has to be spent in evaporation
etc. This turns a project for treatment of the
waste water into a very expensive and uneconomical
proposition. The only solution to overcome this
issue is to treat the waste water through a UF-RO
combination system.

inputs comprising herbal organic inputs, liquid
manure and compost, under the ORGANO brand.
These are proving a boon to farmers particularly
given the increasing concern in the domestic market
about chemical pesticide levels in food and water,
the recent rejections of exports of grapes and
other fruits due to high pesticide residues and
the tougher EU regulations on usage of chemical
pesticides on food crops.

B Mera Brand say Consumers

for the second time in a row. The survey covered
over 12,000 households across the country and was
conducted by AMGF Inter Corp along with TnS as their
research partners and analysts. Ernst and Young
was the tabulation process validator.
R S Rajan, Vice President, Consumer Products Division,

osmosis technology in the country, the emotional
association of the consumer with the brand is very
strong and that is further cemented by superior
product performance and after sales service.”

families, in the healthiest possible way, winning
some awards and many hearts along the way.
Zero B spreads water awareness
World Water Day, March 22, saw Zero B tying up with
Helen OGrady Childrens Drama Academy
to promote awareness on pure water in the city.
As a part of the drive, the Academy, in association
with our Consumer Products Division organised a
play highlighting the issues of water scarcity and
water contamination in Mumbai, which has recently
been plagued by jaundice and other water-related
problems. Ion Exchange India had earlier conducted
a Free Water Testing drive for Mumbai
city, where we had deployed a workforce of about
200 people, who attended helpline calls and conducted
tests that gave results on the level of contamination
in the household water supply. As aptly said by
Mr. R. S. Rajan, Vice President - Consumer Products
Division, We see it as a social responsibility
to ensure that the people are educated about the
inadequacies of current practices and look forward
to safer and healthier living. The kind of response
we have received from the public in our endeavors
so far has been very encouraging.
